Techniques for Recruiting Employees - 690 Words
Medical futility is a judgment that further medical treatment of a patient would have no useful result and that medical treatment whose success is possible, although reasoning and experience suggest that it is highly improbable. Deciding to withdraw care on a patient is difficult for all involved, however in some cases it is a necessary, humane, decision. Two very different examples are the case study in our reading, Mr. Smith, and of Terri Schiavo. Mr. Smith was an elderly man who had lived with Multiple Sclerosis for over 20 years. He was admitted to the hospital with urosepsis and his sons wanted everything done for their father. Mr. Smith did not have a living will. While initially Mr. Smithââ¬â¢s condition was treatable, he soonâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦However, there are documented reports of her reacting to family members. Her husband wanted to withdraw her feeding tube so she could die ââ¬Å"peacefullyâ⬠but her parents wanted to keep providing medical treatmen t and care to their daughter. While Terri was considered to have brain damage and was in a wheelchair, she was able to breathe on her own and maintain the functions needed for survival (ie blood pressure, heartbeat, kidney function, etc.). To her parents, she was their daughter and deserved the necessary physical, occupational and speech therapy to help her reach maximum recovery. Her husband thought otherwise. He considered her a vegetable. He wanted the feeding tube removed so she could die. The saddest part about Terri Schiavoââ¬â¢s case is her parents were willing to take care of her but because her husband was next of kin, and Terri didnââ¬â¢t have a living will, all decisions were made by her husband. His decision was to remove the tube and sadly, Terri was starved to death. She died two weeks after her feeding tube was removed. Should she have died? Absolutely not, especially with her parents and siblings more than willing to assume all responsibility of her care. Wit hdrawing care of a patient with zero chance of survival is completely different than starving a person to death. Mr. Smith was 84, had been bed bound for 20 years, and couldnââ¬â¢t maintain any bodily functions needed for survival.
